Buir Lake Project

The Buir Lake Project, located in Khalkhgol Sum of Dornod Province, represents a major step toward preserving the fragile ecosystem of Buir Lake. This initiative aims to combat sand migration and promote long-term environmental sustainability in the region.

Supported by the Global Nature Fund and the Living Lakes Network through their platforms globalnature.org and livinglakes.org, the project focuses on planting trees around the perimeter of Buir Lake. These efforts help safeguard the lake’s natural habitat and mitigate the negative effects of desertification.

The primary goal of the project is to prevent sand encroachment and preserve the natural environment of the lake. To achieve this, we have undertaken the following activities:

  • Constructed two winter greenhouses to cultivate tree seedlings year-round.
  • Developed a 5-hectare area dedicated to greenhouse operations and seedling production.
  • Engaged local communities and military personnel to increase participation and resource efficiency.

Looking ahead, the following steps will be prioritized to ensure continued progress:

  • Seedling Cultivation: Begin the large-scale planting and nurturing of tree seedlings within the greenhouses in preparation for outdoor transplantation near Buir Lake.
  • Community Engagement: Maintain close collaboration with local communities to ensure their continued involvement and support for the project’s long-term sustainability.
  • Monitoring and Maintenance: Implement a monitoring system to track seedling growth and quickly respond to emerging challenges, ensuring the success and impact of the project.

These ongoing efforts are essential for advancing the project and achieving our ultimate goal: protecting the ecosystem of Buir Lake while preventing further desertification in the area.
